Abortion activists claim abortion pills are ‘life-saving’: they’re wrong
True North Media recently published an article about Campaign Life Coalition's efforts to have the abortion pill recalled due to many cases of adverse reactions being reported on Health Canada’s “Canada Vigilance Program” database.
The article included comments from CLC Director of Communications Pete Baklinski. He spoke about these cases of adverse reactions, including the death of a 19-year-old. True North also included comments from Joyce Arthur, the founder and Executive Director of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC), who, unfortunately, stated many untruths that must be debunked.
Arthur claims that the abortion pill (marketed in Canada as Mifegymiso) is as “safe” as early aspiration abortion and far “safer” than delivering a child after a full-term pregnancy. The latter claim, in particular, is nothing short of preposterous.
This is incorrect simply because abortion is never safe. It is meant to kill a child and end a pregnancy. A successful abortion, no matter which method is used, will always kill at least one human being.
And, abortion pills are certainly not safe for the mother either. The label for the abortion pill used in the United States (marketed as Mifeprex) states that between 2.9% and 4.6% of women who undergo the Mifepristone/Misoprostol protocol will go to the emergency room. This means that in the US context, tens of thousands of women taking abortion pills will end up needing emergency care. And what about the women who have died using abortion pills? At least two Canadian women are already dead. The pills certainly weren’t safe for them.
Arthur’s claim that abortions are “far safer” for mothers than carrying a child to term and birthing that child is misleading.
Rates of complications from surgical abortions and childbirth are very similar (between 2-3% and 1-3%, respectively), and maternal mortality rates are extremely low (8.3 per 100,000 live births, or 0.008%.) When abortion activists claim that abortion is “far safer” than delivering a full-term pregnancy, they are squabbling over the smallest percentage points to promote their agenda of preborn child killing.
Arthur also stated to True North that “approved drugs are approved for a reason – they are either overwhelmingly safe…or if they have serious side effects/complications, their life-saving properties are considered far greater, chemotherapy, for example.” There is nothing “life-saving” about abortion pills. They kill. They destroy. They end hopes and dreams. There is nothing medicinal about these deadly pills. They are human pesticides that have no place in the healing arts.
It’s truly unfortunate that Arthur is so bound by abortion ideology that she is willing to sacrifice even the good of women’s health for it. How many women must be brutally injured and killed by abortion pills before she admits that she is wrong?
Out of this misfortune, however, comes a chance to educate Canadians on the truth of abortion and its consequences. In the end, the truth will always win. Let us pray for Joyce Arthur and all of those who are affiliated with the ARCC that they may repent for their misdeeds and be converted.
