What is Abortion?
Abortion is the direct and intentional killing of a preborn human being living within his or her mother.
How are Abortions Committed?
Preborn babies are aborted either (1) surgically or (2) chemically (misleadingly referred to as medical).
1. Surgical abortion methods available in Canada depend on the gestational age of the baby. The following abortion methods, used in different trimesters, are explained by former abortionists in the corresponding videos.
- In the first trimester, babies are often killed via an aspiration, dilation, and curettage abortion (Suction D&C abortion), in which a suction catheter is inserted into the mother’s uterus to destroy and vacuum out the preborn baby. The vacuum, 10-20 times more powerful than a household vacuum cleaner, pulverizes the tiny developing baby and placenta, emptying the uterus by sucking everything into a jar. Tools are used to scrape any remaining parts from the lining of the uterus.
- In the second trimester, babies are often killed via a dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion, in which forceps inserted into the womb are used to dismember and disembowel the baby, crushing the baby’s skull, before extraction from the uterus.
- In the third trimester, babies are often killed via an induction abortion, in which the baby is injected with a lethal dose of potassium chloride or digoxin prior to the mother being induced. She then delivers the dead baby.
2. Chemical abortion has been available in Canada since 2017.
- Mifegymiso (also known as RU-486), the Canadian brand of chemical abortion, involves a two-drug combination which can be offered to women less than 9 weeks (63 days) pregnant. Mifepristone, a synthetic steroid, blocks the hormone called progesterone. This shuts down the woman's pregnancy-sustaining mechanism, killing the baby. Misoprostol (the second drug), given about a day later, initiates powerful uterine contractions that cause the woman to expel her dead baby.
- The effects of the first step in a chemical abortion can be reversed with early intervention and the baby can be saved. Find out more here.
Is Abortion Health Care?
No. Health care is the organized provision of medical care to people so that they can maintain or improve their health via the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, illness, or injury. Pregnancy is not a disease, illness, nor injury.
Healthcare aims at increasing vitality in the recipient and in no way intentionally ends human life. Since abortion is the direct and intentional killing of a preborn human being living within his or her mother, abortion is not health care. Health care providers formerly swore an oath to “do no harm,” including not providing a pregnant woman with a substance “to cause abortion.” The preborn child is a human being who equally deserves health care alongside his mother. When a pregnant woman visits her doctor, the doctor is seeing two patients: the mother and her preborn baby.
Is Abortion Safe?
There is no such thing as a safe abortion. The sole purpose of abortion is to kill a human being prior to birth. The procedure has failed if it does not result in a dead baby. Abortion is thus never safe for the preborn child.
Abortion is not safe for the mother. Both surgical and chemical abortions harm women on many levels, including physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.
If you have had an abortion and need help and healing, many resources are available, including Silent No More Awareness, Sisters for Life, Rachel’s Vineyard, and Project Rachel.
What do Abortions Look Like?
There are photos and videos of the victims of abortion. Many pro-life advocates believe that abortion will not end until citizens see what abortion looks like and recognize the horror of tiny babies being brutally destroyed in their mothers’ wombs.
Abortion victim photography reveals the humanity of the preborn and the inhumanity of abortion. The images show dismembered body parts: severed hands with identifiable fingers, disfigured faces, torn legs, and crushed ribcages.

Are there Alternatives to Abortion?
Instead of choosing to end the life of their preborn child, pregnant women have the option of adoption or parenting. There are nearly 150 pregnancy care centres across Canada that help mothers in numerous ways by providing various resources, including diapers, baby clothes, food, housing, emotional support, counselling, and a community to help them flourish.
These centres exist to help meet women’s physical, emotional, legal, and spiritual needs throughout their pregnancy and following the birth of their child.
