Why is it important to join a political party?
The most important reason to become a card-carrying member of a political party is so that you can vote in “nomination meetings” which are held to select a new candidate to represent the party in your riding at the next election.
Our goal is to have a large number of party members in every riding of the country. The cost to become a party member is inexpensive - usually $10-$15 per year, and the application form is simple.
Why is it important to vote at nomination meetings?
This is the easiest way to ensure there will be a pro-life candidate in your riding for whom you can vote in the next general election or byelection. Unlike general elections, not many people show up to nomination meetings. In general elections, thousands show up to vote. However at nomination meetings, only a few hundred people attend and sometimes fewer than 100.
A good example occurred during the lead up to Ontario's August 1, 2013 byelection in the provincial riding of Scarborough-Guildwood. The NDP nominated Adam Giambrone to run in the byelection with only 38 votes! If we had just 20 pro-lifer residents (51% of the vote) in that riding to buy NDP memberships, we could have conducted a take over of the nomination meeting. We would now have accomplished the amazing feat of running a pro-lifer under a rabidly pro-abortion federal party.
The lesson is if there are a lot of pro-lifers registered as party members, they can quite handily elect worthy candidates. This takes much less effort than getting-out-the-vote for general elections and can have far bigger pay-offs. Please contact us to find out how you can get involved.
Why is it important to volunteer on the Executive Committee of your local riding association?
- As an executive member, you may be able to exert influence in searching for nomination candidates who are pro-life.
- As an executive member who is pro-life, you may catch wind of efforts by pro-abortion executive members of efforts to try and sabotage the nomination papers for a known pro-life candidate. This repugnant, undemocratic practice to scuttle nominations has occurred in the past, and has also been conducted by party headquarters . If pro-life people are on the Executive Committee, they may be able to block the sabotage of pro-life nomination candidates.
- You may be invited to attend party policy conventions where policies for the entire party are proposed and voted on;
- If you volunteer on the board for the local riding association, you can help influence, or even write, pro-life/pro-family policy proposals which then get submitted for voting eligibility at the national/provincial policy conventions.
