A March in Anticipation
If pro-lifers have proven anything over the past 50 years, it’s that we are committed to our cause. Come May 9, thousands will take the day off work, and many will travel hours to get to Ottawa, heading out from their local communities in the wee hours of the morning. The students who attend do so at what is a very busy time in the school year for them, and often sacrifice additional precious time to fundraise for their trips.
We endure these minor hardships because we understand the importance of showing up to bear witness to the injustice of abortion and other attacks on life, and to demand action from our elected officials. The best way to see action will be to elect pro-life politicians this upcoming federal election, scheduled to take place on October 21, 2019.
Pro-lifers are getting more and more mobilized. We saw a huge pushback against the summer jobs program attestation from members of all faith communities. Campaign Life Coalition has signed up thousands of supporters for memberships to various political parties so that they could vote in leadership and/or nomination contests. A large number of them have participated in party conventions and succeeded in getting pro-life and pro-family policies passed. Grassroots members of this movement are fiercely dedicated to going the distance to make a difference.
So, this March is not just about looking back at the past—it’s also about casting a determined gaze to the future. We will not sit idly by and let another 50 years of this human rights injustice pass by. We will not let pro-lifers be bullied into submission. We refuse to be censored or silenced. We will fill the chambers we congregate before with representatives who won’t flinch back from the duty to defend life from conception to natural death.
When we rally—when the lawn of Parliament Hill becomes swathed in pro-life veterans, large families, and vibrant youth all proclaiming together that we stand for LIFE—we rally not just for the March ahead, but also in preparation for the election period. This National March for Life is the beginning of a long stretch ahead of us, during which we will become more active in educating our fellow community members about life issues and in volunteering for pro-life candidates. And we can’t wait to kick into high gear.
