Candidate, Brendon John DaCosta
Waterloo Region, Chair, ON
Bio
CLC rating: Pro-free speech, Educable on abortion
Rating Comments: During an interview with a CLC supporter, DaCosta revealed that while he believes abortion should be available for certain situations, he opposes its common use as a form of contraception, and that the practice should be "wholly discouraged". He agrees that it is settled science that human life begins at conception, and believes that "significant limitations and barriers should be in place to discourage the practice (of abortion)". DaCosta thinks that while taxpayers should still be forced to pay for abortions, funding should be "reallocated" to pro-life pregnancy centers and not just to pro-abortion organizations like Planned Parenthood (PP). Furthermore, DaCosta said that PP should be stripped of municipal funding if it does not promote all the options available to pregnant women and it it displays a bias towards abortion. On the question of censorship zones which unconstitutionally supress the free speech rights of pro-lifer citizens, DaCosta said he opposes such censorship laws as a violation "of our Charter protected rights".

Question | Response |
---|---|
Organizations like Planned Parenthood (PP) routinely counsel women to have abortions. Given that abortion is a controversial practice that many taxpayers in your city/municipality find abhorrent, do you agree that PP and its affiliates should not receive taxpayer funds through the city/municipality? | mixed response |
Do you acknowledge that human life begins at conception (fertilization)? | yes |
Do you consider yourself pro-life or pro-choice? | mixed response |
There has been a move in some municipal jurisdictions to pass bylaws which establish censorship zones, also called “bubble zones”, around abortion facilities. These unconstitutional censorship zones make it illegal to express peaceful pro-life speech, including silent prayer, on taxpayer-owned public sidewalks within the vicinity of abortion facilities and pharmacies which dispense abortion pills. If elected, would you vote to oppose such a censorship bylaw, if it were ever proposed? | yes |
