CLC rating: Pro-family, but unknown on abortion.
Rating Comments: On October 30, 2017, as Chief Whip of the newly-formed United Conservative Party of Alberta, MLA McIver defended Catholics from slander by leftist NDP Premier Rachel Notley (See quotes tab)

On April 18, 2016, as PC Party Leader McIver was ejected from the Alberta Legislature's session by NDP House Speaker Bob Wanner. In a show of true conviction, McIver defended his Party's Motion 504 to protect parental choice of educational delivery (including home, private, and separate schools) by challenging Speaker Wanner's ruling to allow an NDP Amendment to Motion 504 and refusing to take his seat again until the ruling was reversed. The NDP Amendment would have gutted the PC Motion by "allowing parents the choice of education delivery for their children...where they offer alternatives not available in the public system," clearly implying that children belong to the Government instead of to their parents. CLC applauds Mr. McIver, on this occasion, for courageously defending parental choice in education.

Previously, for four years, Mr. McIver participated in the March for Jesus in Calgary, which is organized by a group that disagreed with the homosexual lifestyle on its website. Once the media picked up this story, however, McIver distanced himself from the group, saying he would no longer support them and that he was angry at their statements about homosexuals. He announced plans to attend a gay rodeo and possibly Calgary's Pride Parade. No response to multiple transmissions of CLC's election questionnaire.

Here is Ric McIver's voting record relating to life and family issues:

Votes, Surveys and Policy Decision Vote Score
Bill 24, An Act to Support Gay-Straight Alliances
This atrocious bill, sponsored by the socialist NDP government's Education Minister David Eggen, makes it illegal for school teachers to inform parents of their own children's involvement in homosexualist/transsexualist "GSA" clubs, effectively turning schools into hiding places where children can lead sexual double-lives without their own parents' knowledge. The bill usurps parents' primary rights to direct the moral formation and sexual behaviour of their own children by treating parents as the enemy, inculcating distrust of parents and instigating an attitude of collusion between hired school teachers and other people's children, behind parents' backs. This anti-parent bill passed 42 - 23 upon third reading. [November 15, 2017]
No ok
Bill 9, to transform taxpayer-owned public sidewalks near abortion facilities into NO FREE SPEECH ZONES
This unconstitutional, totalitarian law, introduced by the communistic NDP, criminalizes peaceful pro-life expression on taxpayer-owned public property within a radius of up to 150m near abortion facilities. Under this gag law, even silent prayer is outlawed near abortion facilities and people will face up to 1 year in jail and/or be fined up to $10,000. Even freedom of the press is restricted by this law within the No Free Speech Zone. More babies will be killed at the hands of abortionists as a result of these No Free Speech Zones because pro-life sidewalk counsellors are no longer permitted to speak to the mothers entering the abortuary about the choice of adoption, nor to offer support with a crisis pregnancy, nor even to offer scientific information about fetal development to demonstrate that her baby really is a human being. The bill passed by a vote of 45 Yeas to 1 Nay. The UCP MLAs were ordered by Jason Kenney NOT to vote against this horrendous bill, nor even to speak against it during debate. Kenney and many of the UCP MLAs fled the legislature during the vote in order to avoid having to take a stand. [Passed 3rd reading May 30, 2018]
Abstained under order of Jason Keneney bad

Here are quotes from Ric McIver on various life and family issues:

Explaining his proper demand that anti-Catholic, pro-child-sexualization NDP Premier Rachel Notley apologize to all Alberta Catholics for misrepresenting the views of Catholic School Superintendents regarding sexual consent:  “The premier accused every Catholic in Alberta essentially of being in favour of non-consensual sex, or rape, and she needs to apologize . . . (Notley) maligned an entire faith community." [edmontonjournal.com, "UCP chief whip Ric McIver demands premier apologize to all Catholics for consent comments", October 31, 2017]
