Mayor Jyoti Gondek
Calgary, City Mayor, AB
Bio
CLC rating: Pro-LGBT ideology; not supportable on abortion
Rating Comments: Jyoti Gondek, a former Calgary City Councillor, was elected Mayor of Calgary in the 2021 Alberta municipal elections.
In May 2023, Mayor Gondek joined 13 Calgary City Councillors to pass a heavy-handed Motion censoring the images of abortion's victims by forcing them to be concealed in envelopes prior to distribution, thus significantly impeding the efficacy of these pro-life educational materials.
On May 25, 2020, then-Councillor Gondek voted to pass a tyrannical ban on so-called "conversion therapy", thereby robbing Calgarians of their human right to freely seek therapy and council to overcome unwanted homoerotic and transsexualist fixations.
Previously, on February 3, 2020, Gondek joined the rest of the Calgary City Councillors to unanimously pass a motion to draft the bylaw banning this beneficial and effective practice within the city boundaries. The bylaw will ban psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, priests and pastors from providing counselling support to patients who request assistance with unwanted same-sex attraction and gender identity confusion. It will also inevitably lead to the de-facto criminalization of key Christian teachings on human sexuality, predictably including public prayer and evangelization to call homosexuals out of a sinful lifestyle.

Here is Jyoti Gondek's voting record relating to life and family issues:
Votes, Surveys and Policy Decision | Vote | Score |
---|---|---|
Motion: Regulating the Unsolicited Distribution of Graphic Images Depicting a Fetus Calgary City Council vote to censor the images of abortion's victims by forcing them to be concealed in envelopes bearing warning labels and the name of the pro-life advocacy group, all of which will add significantly to the cost and time involved in producing these pro-life educational materials. Each breach of these arbitrary strictures carries a $1,000 fine. This Motion will curtail and suppress the capacity of pro-life groups to freely inform the public about the atrocity of abortion and motivate people of good will to put an end to the abortion holocaust. Sadly, this free-speech-stifling Motion passed by a vote of 14 to 0 on May 9, 2023. |

Question | Response |
---|---|
Organizations like Planned Parenthood (PP) routinely counsel women to have abortions. Given that abortion is a controversial practice that many taxpayers in your municipality find abhorrent, do you agree that PP and similar “sexual health agencies" should not receive taxpayer funds through the municipality? | survey not sent |
Do you acknowledge that human life begins at conception (fertilization)? | survey not sent |
Do you consider yourself pro-life or pro-choice? | survey not sent |
There has been a move in some municipal jurisdictions to pass bylaws which establish censorship zones, also called “bubble zones”, around abortion facilities. These unconstitutional censorship zones make it illegal to express peaceful pro-life speech, including silent prayer, on taxpayer-owned public sidewalks within the vicinity of abortion facilities and pharmacies which dispense abortion pills. If elected, would you vote to oppose such a censorship bylaw? | survey not sent |
