Halton Catholic District School Board, ON
Electoral District: Milton Wards 1 & 4
Bio
CLC rating: Not Supportable
Rating Comments: Lost bid for a trustee seat in 2018 Ontario municipal elections. Although Ms. Abdelsayed gave good answers to CLC's 2018 catholic school trustee election questionnaire, she is disqualified from support due to public statements she made which have the effect of undermining Catholic pro-life teachings.
At an all-candidates meeting, Abdelsayed expressed opposition to the wording of the wonderful and much-needed pro-life policy that had been passed by the existing Board of Trustees. She has repeated her opposition in a public forum since the candidates debate.
The Sanctity of Life policy, as passed, prohibits HCDSB schools from donating to charities who either directly or indirectly promote the evils of abortion, euthanasia, the destruction of embryonic human beings, contraception, and sterilization - all practices which are condemned by Roman Catholic doctrinal teaching as intrinsically evil.
At the public meeting, Abdelsayed suggested that the only way she would be willing to vote for such a policy is if the wording were changed to continue to allow fundraising for organizations that promote abortion and other assaults on human life, when those assaults are only done "indirectly".
In CLC's opinion, Catholic institutions have a moral, ethical and religious obligation to avoid cooperating with evil, whether directly or indirectly.
To remove the word "indirectly" from the Sanctity of Life policy, as Abdelsayed suggested, would open a loophole big enough to drive a Mack truck through, and allow virtually any charity that publicly - even aggressively - promotes abortion, euthanasia, etc, to continue receiving Catholic funds. Deleting the word "indirectly" renders the policy practically useless with respect to having any ability whatsoever to uphold Catholic teaching, or to "hinder" sin (as compelled by Section 1868 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church).
