Rating Comments: On February 10, 2020, Councillor Hyggen courageously voted against a draconian Motion to draft a by-law that would ban what is being disingenuously labelled "conversion therapy", throughout the City of Lethbridge. In reality, "conversion therapy" is just traditional talk therapy as professionally practiced by licensed psychologists to help same-sex attracted or gender-confused patients who VOLUNTARILY come to them seeking help to recover their heterosexual potential, or to overcome sexual confusion. This propaganda term of "conversion therapy" also ensnares pastoral guidance to help those with UNWANTED same-sex attraction to live chastely in accordance with their faith. Such a totalitarian ban would effectively prevent people with unwanted homoerotic fixations and transgender delusions from receiving the therapeutic help they're seeking to overcome their unwanted condition. However, at the same meeting, Councillor Hyggen inexpicably voted in favour of sending an official letter from Lethbridge City Council to Alberta's provincial government, asking it to ban "conversion therapy" throughout the entire province and thus enforce a key LGBT ideological conquest on all Albertans, including vulnerable and impressionable children.
On July 13, 2020, Lethbridge Council passed their anti-freedom by-law banning talk therapy and spiritual counselling, after shockingly voting against Councillor Hyggen's principled Motion to hear public consultations on the by-law. Such muzzling of public input by Council contradicts its own procedural guidelines... and democracy.
Also to his credit, Councillor Hyggen voted in favour of an amendment to the preamble of the by-law that acknowledges "freedom of conscience and religion" as being guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but it is a weak amendment that constitutional lawyers immediately said would prove ineffectual in protecting therapists, priests and pastors from being savaged under the Kafkaesque by-law .
