Bio

Danielle Smith
Not Supportable
CLC rating: Pro-abortion, anti-traditional marriage
Rating Comments: Formerly leader of the now-defunct Wildrose Party. In November 2000, as a Calgary Herald columnist, she opposed taxpayer funding of abortion, and proposed citizen's ballot initiatives as a direct democracy solution for Albertans to defund elective abortion. She also said "second and third trimester abortions are horrific". In an Oct. 2009 CTV article she said she wouldn't push a referendum on abortion funding for fear of dividing the party, and that she would continue funding abortions that are for "medically necessary or hardship procedures". During the 2012 election she described herself as "pro-gay marriage" and "pro-choice".

During the 2022 United Conservative Party of Alberta leadership race, Ms. Smith again described herself a "pro-choice".

Here are quotes from Danielle Smith on various life and family issues:

Reacting to the US Supreme Court's principled overturning in June 2022 of the infamous 1973 Roe vs. Wade pro-abortion ruling:  "I am pro-choice, and that includes supporting a person's right to make choices on what to do with their own body..." [Fairview Post, 'Aheer lone UCP leadership candidate to condemn U.S. Supreme Court abortion decision', June 29, 2022]

Stated that her party would support conscience rights to protect marriage commissioners against having to perform homosexual 'marriages', and protect doctors from having to kill babies in the womb:  “The Wildrose will ensure conscience rights for marriage commissioners and health professionals... This would ensure the protection of personal expression for individuals, while also ensuring that personal beliefs are respected for all Albertans... If you look at the current professional designation for doctors, for nurses, for pharmacists, they’ve already dealt with this issue” [National Post, "‘I’m pro-choice and I’m pro-gay marriage’: Wildrose leader Danielle Smith slams PC ‘fearmongering’", April 11, 2012]

At an all-candidates meeting she proclaimed that she supports killing babies in-utero and is against the true definition of marriage:  "When our members elected me they knew they were electing a candidate that was pro-choice and pro-gay marriage... The only way we’re going to be able to become a mainstream, big-tent conservative party capable of forming government is to focus on the issues that matter to Albertans... If I am elected premier, a Wildrose government will not be legislating in areas of morality.”

[National Post, '‘I’m pro-choice and I’m pro-gay marriage’: Wildrose leader Danielle Smith slams PC ‘fearmongering’", April 11, 2012]

In a column she wrote for the Calgary Herald, Smith strongly insinuates that taxpayers shouldn't be forced to pay for abortions:  "Most Canadians respect that the decision is between a woman, her doctor, and God, but I’m sure they also agree the taxpayer should not be on the hook to pay for it” [Calgary Herald, November 2000]

Here are the answers for the questionnaire as provided by Danielle Smith on 2023.

Do you acknowledge that human life begins at conception (fertilization)? no response
Are there any circumstances under which you believe a woman should have access to abortion? Will you support measures to stop funding abortions with taxpayers' money in Alberta? no response
Do you agree women have the right to be thoroughly informed about the serious health consequences of abortion, the development of the child in the womb and the alternatives to abortion? no response
Will you protect the rights of parents to educate their children according to their faith in matters of moral principles and beliefs concerning abortion, contraception and homosexuality? no response
Will you support legislation to protect the right of health care workers who refuse to participate in procedures which are in violation of their religious or conscientious beliefs? no response
Will you oppose euthanasia and instead support measures to promote “palliative care”, the purpose of which is to alleviate pain, and enhance the quality of life for terminally ill patients and those with disabilities? *Euthanasia is the direct and intentional killing of a person by action or omission, with or without that person’s consent, for what people mistakenly believe are compassionate reasons. no response
