New Democratic Party, Dartmouth South, NS

Bio

Claudia Chender
Not Supportable
CLC rating: Pro-abortion, Anti-free speech
Rating Comments: The NDP is officially pro-abortion and pro-LGBT ideology. MLA Claudia Chender proposed the bubble zone legislation that received Royal Assent in March 2020. To justify bringing forward this anti-free speech, anti-life bill, Ms. Chender cited abortion experiences and activism in her own family, which clearly formed her pro-abortion ideology (see Quotes tab). She became the leader of the Nova Scotia NDP in 2022.

Here are quotes from Claudia Chender on various life and family issues:

Revealing the pervasiveness of the child-killing abortion ideology in her family life as a child:  "My mother served on the board of Planned Parenthood for many years, including as the chair of that board. It was always a little bit, not surprising, but I didn't know what the nexus was for her. She just said, Claudia, it is absolutely important that women can access health care and that they can access it without any intimidation and on their own terms."
[Nova Scotia Legislature - Hansard - Assembly 63, Session 2 - Wednesday, March 4, 2020]

Revealing her exposure to abortion ideology as a teenager, by her grandmother, who decided to kill a child by back-alley abortion years before. Needless to say, that child did not survive the abortion:  "We talked about this when I was a teenager. I am so grateful that I had a family with whom I could have these conversations. She had the proverbial back-alley procedure because that was the only option at that time. Luckily, she survived and went on to have two more children."
[Nova Scotia Legislature - Hansard - Assembly 63, Session 2 - Wednesday, March 4, 2020]

Citing a grotesque example of how her own sister - herself associated with the noble practice of midwifery - supports the murder of babies by abortion:  "It was unfortunate, but lucky, that when my sister was a teenager, she herself availed herself of the services of the Planned Parenthood Clinic and also of the Women's Choice Clinic. I called her this morning and I said I'd like to mention you in my remarks, but I don't want to do that if that makes you feel uncomfortable. My sister, who is currently working for the Ontario Midwives said, no, I want you to mention me in your remarks; it's important that you mention me in your remarks. I'm just one person in one family, and the connection that I have to this issue of women's access to reproductive health care just spreads through every part of my life."
[Nova Scotia Legislature - Hansard - Assembly 63, Session 2 - Wednesday, March 4, 2020]

Here are the answers for the questionnaire as provided by Claudia Chender on 2024.

Question Response
Do you acknowledge that human life begins at conception (fertilization)? --
Are there any circumstances under which you believe a woman should have access to abortion? (note: a surgical or medical intervention, designed to prevent the death of the mother but but which results in the unintended and undesired death of the pre-born child, is not an abortion. e.g. in cases of tubal pregnancy or cervical cancer) Yes, all circumstances (based on NDP policy)
Will you support measures to stop funding abortions with taxpayers' money in Nova Scotia? No (based on NDP policy)
Do you agree women have the right to be thoroughly informed about the serious health consequences of abortion, the development of the child in the womb and the alternatives to abortion? --
Will you protect the rights of parents to educate their children according to their faith in matters of moral principles and beliefs concerning abortion, contraception and homosexuality? No (based on NDP's pro-LGBT stance)
Will you support legislation to protect the right of health care workers who refuse to participate in procedures which are in violation of their religious or conscientious beliefs? --
Will you oppose euthanasia and instead support measures to promote “palliative care”, the purpose of which is to alleviate pain, and enhance the quality of life for terminally ill patients and those with disabilities? *Euthanasia is the direct and intentional killing of a person by action or omission, with or without that person’s consent, for what people mistakenly believe are compassionate reasons. --
