Passing of highly unconstitutional Bill C-6 threatens religious freedom, freedom of speech and parental rights
Ottawa, June 22, 2021 – With today’s passing of Bill C-6, an Act to amend the Criminal Code (Conversion Therapy), in the House of Commons by a vote of 263-63, Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) is outraged by this brazen assault on religious freedom, freedom of speech, and parental rights. CLC hopes the Senate will reject the unconstitutional bill so that Canadians who seek clinical therapy or spiritual counselling for unwanted same-sex attraction and gender dysphoria can continue to access the services they want and need.
“Bill C-6 was never about protecting persons who experience same-sex attraction and gender confusion from forcible confinement or electroconvulsive therapy. That was always a red herring,” said Jeff Gunnarson, national president of Campaign Life Coalition. “Instead, this parental prosecution bill is an unprecedented attack on people of faith who hold to the biblical definition of marriage, who adhere to natural law, and who want to protect their children from a life of great suffering, including in some cases, bodily mutilation that is irreversible.”
By voting in favor of this unconstitutional piece of legislation, Parliamentarians have ignored the more than 22,000 Canadians who signed CLC’s petition against Bill C-6, and the many warnings from CLC, the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, and other faith groups, along with the personal stories of ex-LGBT Canadians who overcame their unwanted same-sex attraction with the help of counselling.
“Shame on every Member of Parliament who voted in favor of this Bill that aims to imprison parents, pastors, and mental health professionals for supporting those who seek help,” said Jack Fonseca, spokesperson for Campaign Life Coalition. “At a time when many countries including Sweden and the United Kingdom are putting the brakes on allowing children and teens to transition, Canada is rushing to criminalize even a wait-and-see approach to childhood gender confusion. We call upon the chamber of sober second thought to do the right thing and vote no to prosecuting parents and letting children make irreversible decisions they’ll come to regret.”
