CLC condemns MP Ashton’s call for greater abortion access
Toronto, May 12, 2014 – On Thursday May 8, on the same day as thousands of Canadians rallied on Parliament Hill calling for an end to abortion, abortion activist MP Niki Ashton (Churchill) put forward Motion 510 calling on parliament to declare abortion access as a “fundamental question of equality and human rights, both in Canada and around the world.” Ashton’s motion also seeks to change the government’s current foreign policy of not funding abortion and focusing on life-saving healthcare for women and children in developing nations.
“It’s quite ironic that the same MP who was recently vocally opposed to a motion condemning female gendercide on the grounds that it re-opens the abortion debate, is now championing a motion on expanding abortion access,” said Alissa Golob, spokesperson for Campaign Life Coalition. “Ashton is sending very mixed messages to Canadians. It seems that the only debate she supports is one that can push forward her own abortion agenda.”
In 2010, MP Ashton voted against Bill C-510, a bill to protect women and their preborn children from coercion. In 2011, she voted against Motion 312, a motion calling on parliament to examine when human life begins. In 2013, she planned to vote against Motion 408, a motion condemning sex-selective abortion of baby girls.
Campaign Life Coalition calls on all MPs to vote against Ashton’s motion.
