Kathleen Wynne to face first defund abortion rally at Queen’s Park

Toronto, March. 14, 2013 - On Tuesday March 19, from 12 noon to 2 pm, Ontario taxpayers will gather at Queen’s Park in Toronto to demand that the provincial government delist elective abortion as an insured service subsidized by taxpayer dollars. This defund abortion rally, organized by the youth division of Campaign Life Coalition, will call upon elected officials, and the government of Kathleen Wynne, to do the right thing, fiscally and morally, by defunding abortion.

"If the new premier is serious about health care and our provincial debt, she should defund a medically unnecessary procedure that costs the province at least $30-$50 million every year," said Alissa Golob, Youth Coordinator for Campaign Life Coalition and organizer of the Defund Abortion campaign. "It’s one thing for an individual to have an abortionist kill their baby in the womb; it’s quite another to expect the rest of us to pay for it."

The Canada Health Act (CHA) requires provincial health insurance plans to fund "medically necessary" services, but it does not define abortion as medically necessary. As a result, if Ontario legislators deem an elective proced ure to not be medically necessary, it does not get insured.

"On March 19, taxpayers will send a message to Queen’s Park that they do not want their hard-earned tax dollars paying for abortions while genuine health care needs get cash-starved. The province can’t afford to spend one more penny on a medically unnecessary procedure like elective abortion." said Matthew Wojciechowski, Campaign Life Coalition Youth. "Ontario’s health care system is failing due to skyrocketing costs. We have doctor and nurse shortages, long hospital wait times, and palliative care and treatment for autistic children is grossly underfunded. Let’s redirect the money used for killing babies to real health care."

In the past year, Campaign life Coalition Youth has collected more than 25,000 signatures calling for abortion defunding, organized dozens of mini-rallies at constituency offices, and pamphleted tens of thousands of homes around the province bringing awareness to this taxpayer-defense movement.
