To: Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides
Cc.: Premier Danielle Smith

Whereas, a handful of trustees with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) voted on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, to literally undo the results of a democratic election by taking it upon themselves to circumvent democracy by “un-electing” their colleague, Trustee Monique LaGrange;

And whereas, this group of trustees weaponized a little-known provision in Alberta’s Education Act, found in Section 90 of the Act, to literally “un-elect” Trustee LaGrange off the Board, and thereby disenfranchised voters, rendering their ballots meaningless, and attacked the very essence of democracy;

And whereas, in doing so, these trustees robbed Red Deer Catholic parents and voters of their right to hire, fire, or re-hire their elected representatives every four years at election time, as they see fit;

And whereas, the only individuals who should be allowed to fire a trustee if they do not like her job performance is the voters themselves, at the next election

Therefore, we the undersigned, demand that you, as Alberta’s Minister of Education, immediately repeal Section 90 of the Education Act, also dubbed the “Cancel Democracy Clause”, so that Alberta voters can never be disenfranchised again!

Please change this loophole. It contravenes democratic principles and denies voters of their right to appoint trustees who represent them.

It is unconscionable that a school board who is democratically elected, has the power to remove a trustee who doesn't conform to other trustees ideas. Please fix this loophole in the law.

Trustee was electef by the people fairly and justly ...allowing an inside twist by other trustees or such is not just nor democratic. It allowd for a dangerous precedent and thereby cancells out truth and justice where peoples voice is not heard

I found it disgraceful that an elected member be cast out , terminated by other members who are not part of the public who voted for her. Canada’s democracy is at stake and with such unjust acts this only cements the undeniable fact that Canada is no longer a democracy.
