Trustee Maria Rizzo,

I am calling on you to do the right thing and resign as trustee for the Toronto Catholic District School Board, effective immediately, owing to your public support for the anti-Christian ideologies of Gender Identity and Gender Expression.

I believe nothing short of your resignation, aside from an apology and promise to renounce transgender ideology, will suffice to respect and protect the Catholic identity of our schools.

On October 30th, 2019, the Catholic Values Subcommittee of the TCDSB met to discuss an insidious proposal to incorporate transgender ideology into the Board’s official Code of Conduct.

Of the five members of the Catholic Values Subcommittee, four chose to vote in favour of upholding Catholic values at the meeting on Oct. 30th. However, you were the sole member to vote against those values, in support of Gender Identity Theory.

You have betrayed Catholic teaching and violated the trust placed in you by Catholic parents and ratepayers who expect trustees to faithfully defend and promote authentic Catholic teaching in Toronto’s Catholic schools.

You voted “Yes” to adding the anti-Christian and unscientific terms “gender identity” and “gender expression” to the Code. This would permit and condone the following practices:

  • male students dressing in girls’ clothing and make-up;
  • male students using girls’ washrooms and changerooms;
  • male teachers presenting themselves as female with or without sex-change surgery;
  • students being forced to use biologically false and made-up transgender pronouns; etc.

If passed, concerned parents would be unable to protect their children from the trauma that results from exposure to these practices. Female students, in particular, would be helpless to object to any violation of their privacy and security, in school change rooms and bathrooms.

Furthermore, these practices represent a direct attack on basic Catholic teaching on human sexuality. Christian anthropology of the human person clearly teaches that there are only two sexes, male and female, and that our distinctive maleness and femaleness is dictated by the bodies entrusted to us by God.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

  • “By creating the human being man and woman, God gives personal dignity equally to the one and the other. Each of them, man and woman, should acknowledge and accept his sexual identity” (2393).

Pope Francis has called transgender ideology “demonic” and “an attack on the family”.

According to Section 93 of the Constitution Act and Section 29 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Catholic trustees have the right to uphold Catholic teaching in Catholic schools.

In fact, trustees have a fiduciary obligation to do so!

Sincerely Yours,
