Statement on Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada

Published:  May 29, 2014

Many of you have asked me what to do regarding the Liberal Party of Canada, now that its leader, Justin Trudeau, has explicitly banned people who hold pro-life views from being candidates for the Party in the upcoming 2015 election.

Historically, Campaign Life Coalition has not supported Parties, but rather, individual candidates or would be candidates who are pro-life. That is why, when the New Democratic Party stated as official dogma that no one would be accepted as a candidate if they were pro-life (they stated, unless they were pro-choice) and that all MP’s would be required to vote “pro-choice” under pain of expulsion from the caucus and not having their nomination papers signed by the Leader for the next election, we could no longer support that Party, in any way.

Since the Liberal Party, under its present Leader, contrary to all of its previous Leaders, now effectively takes the same position, we can no longer advise pro-life people to remain involved in the Liberal Party.

As no pro-life person will be accepted as a candidate in the Liberal Party, and since the Party is now, in the words of its Leader, “resolutely pro-choice” I have no alternative but to advise any person who has pro-life beliefs not to support any candidate seeking election under the Liberal Party banner, nor should you support the Party, financially or otherwise.

Given our long association with members of the Liberal Party, its pro-life candidates and its past pro-life MPs, this advice to you is given with a heavy heart.

We must continue to work for those candidates and potential candidates who are willing and able to speak up for the most innocent and vulnerable among us, the unborn. Sadly, at least for now, our choices will be severely compromised. We must work for the day when Canada returns to a time when a person’s fundamental moral beliefs do not disqualify them from seeking political office through a recognized political Party.
