Westlock, AB Plebiscite on Banning Pride Symbols
On Thursday, February 22, 2024, a plebiscite will take place in the town of Westlock, Alberta to decide whether or not Pride flags and symbols should be displayed on municipal property.
This comes in response to a petition organized by Stephanie Bakker asking the town council to enact a bylaw which would keep crosswalks and public flag poles neutral, so as not to favour or discriminate against any particular interest groups. If passed, such a bylaw would remove the painted rainbow crosswalk which was placed in the town in June of 2023. It would also mean that only municipal, provincial and federal government flags would be flown on public flag poles in the town.
Voting information is not yet available, but is expected to be released by the town of Westlake closer to the date of the plebiscite. Please check back regularly for future updates.
