Quebec Attacks Christmas Church Services
What do you think about politicians telling believers how they can and can’t worship God? What about bureaucrats deciding who is and isn’t allowed to attend church services this Christmas? Is that their job?
Can’t believe this could ever happen in Canada?
Well, that is exactly what is happening in la belle province.
Politicians and public health officials in Quebec are now banning certain elements of divine worship and barring thousands from church attendance.
I guess Premier François Legault likes to be in charge of everything!
On December 20th, the Legault government had the audacity to specifically forbid kneeling and standing in church. No more kneeling to pray. No more standing to sing. You can read this unbelievable diktat for yourself on the Gouvernement du Québec website.

This is an unprecedented intrusion into the ancient, liturgical practices of our faith! It is impossible to imagine how such a regulation – unique in all of Canada – could have anything to do with public health or the reduction of COVID-19.
In addition, the Quebec government has also prohibited unvaccinated citizens from attending worship. By dismissing their conscientious objections to abortion-tainted vaccines, over 600,000 Quebeckers will be barred from accessing the ministry of the Word and Sacraments during this Christmas season.
The Bethlehem Declaration outlines Catholic objections to unethical COVID-19 vaccines and vaccine mandates. Such objections are being entirely dismissed.
Who gave those Quebec politicians and bureaucrats the ecclesiastical authority to dictate the terms of worship to the church? Who gave them the right to disfellowship unvaccinated believers?
The Bible is abundantly clear that no one should be barred from church on the basis of their status in society. According to St. Peter, “God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean... In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him” (Acts 10:28-35).
The Lord Jesus bids us: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
Whether we are socially acceptable or social outcasts, whether the government has given us a green pass or labels us as second-class, Christ welcomes us with open arms into His church!
How outrageous it is for Mr. Legault to contradict Christ!
Elsewhere in Canada, we see other dubious and discriminatory restrictions being placed on believers in the name of “public health”.
- In British Columbia, unvaccinated citizens are forbidden from attending Christmas dinners with family and friends in private homes. They may be totally healthy, but they must remain isolated and alone. In the northern region of BC, like in Quebec, unvaccinated Christians are also barred from attending church.
- In New Brunswick, unvaccinated worshippers are prohibited from singing hymns and Christmas carols in church.
We have reached a serious crisis in “the True North strong and free”. Our Canadian Constitution, enacted in 1982, recognizes “freedom of conscience and religion” as our first “fundamental freedom”. The distinctive ministry and calling of the church is not under the control of the secular state; but the state is trying to exert control over the church!
We also enjoy “freedom of peaceful assembly” and “freedom of association” in Canada, which are enumerated in our Constitution as “fundamental freedoms” as well. These freedoms allow Canadians to associate and assemble together with each other regardless of their social or vaccination status. But that right is being trampled.
If we allow our elected political leaders to play God, control our churches, strip us of our freedoms, and overrule our consciences, who knows what madness they will try to get away with next? Who knows where they will lead us next?

Our government leaders, in their desire to appear to be “doing everything” to combat COVID-19, have crossed a line no elected representative should ever cross. They have lost sight of the God-ordained limits to their own realm of authority. They have taken too much power to themselves, and in the words of Lord Acton, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Therefore, we must call our elected officials to account and urge them to revoke their harmful, totalitarian mandates.
During this Christmas season, may we not allow some “here today, gone tomorrow” politicians to interfere with the worship of our eternal God and Saviour. May we continue to seek Christ with all our hearts and call on our friends, neighbours, and political leaders to do the same.
