At a news conference in Vancouver on August 7th, 2012, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, speaking on the Northern Gateway pipeline issue, said the following:

“The only way that governments can handle controversial projects of this manner is to ensure that things are evaluated on an independent basis scientifically, and not simply on political criteria.”

The Prime Minister wants science not politics to decide the fate of so-called controversial issues.  And according to him, that’s the ONLY way of doing it. Well… only when it’s convenient.

Case in point: Motion 312.

Stephen Woodworth’s private member’s motion calls upon parliament to re-examine the status of the pre-born child using modern scientific and medical evidence, not political criteria.

This motion is on a controversial subject, and thus seeks science, not politics, for an answer.

And yet, the Prime Minister is pressuring his caucus to oppose the motion.
