Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board - ON
Electoral District: Kingston and Frontenac Islands

Bio

Kathy Turkington
Not Supportable
CLC rating: Problematic response to LGBTQ survey
Rating Comments: Re-elected in 2018. She did not answer CLC's 2014 election survey. However, she did reply to a gay-activist organization's election survey in which she told them she supports gay-straight alliance clubs and "queer clubs" being in Catholic schools. These types of clubs are essentially gay-pride clubs that undermine Catholic teaching on marriage and family. Under no circumstances should faithful Catholics be supportive of such a counter-witness to Catholic doctrine, much less trustees who have a fiduciary obligation to uphold the Christian Faith.
Percentage in last election: 18.62% (2010), 17.88% (2014), 17.9% (2022)
Victory margin last election: 7.39% (2014), 6% (2022)
Religion / Faith: Catholic

Here are quotes from Kathy Turkington on various life and family issues:

Appeared to express support for homosexual-activist student clubs, aka GSAs, when responding to a gay-activist organization's 2014 election survey:  I am not sure I am knowledgeable about the issues facing LGBT youth but I would be happy to hear from you about the issues and what you felt a Catholic school board trustee could do to help. The ALCDSB has as part of its Mission Statement, 'We shall ensure quality instruction and diversified learning in a safe environment, so that the potential of each learner may be realized.' I would hope and pray that ALL of our students would feel safe in our schools. Gay-Straight Alliances and clubs are already permitted in our schools and must follow the rules for all clubs and organization within the school setting.' Here are the answers for the questionnaire as provided by Kathy Turkington on 2014.

Question Response
Will you personally uphold and work toward the public promotion of total fidelity to the faith and moral teachings of the Catholic Church? (Current examples include the illicitness of abortion, contraception and homosexual practice) Replied 'yes' in 2010, but her LGBTQ survey response negates this answer.
Will you actively promote and defend the teaching of Catholic doctrine, the importance of prayer and a regular sacramental life? Replied 'yes' in 2010, but her LGBTQ survey response negates this answer.
Will you work against any attempt to expand the sex-ed program in the Catholic Schools which is contrary to Church teaching, such as the one which included oral sex, masturbation and homosexuality, recently offered by the Ministry? Replied 'yes' in 2010, but her LGBTQ survey response negates this answer.
Will you work to ensure that your Catholic school board enacts a policy requiring all agents and employees of the board to uphold the rights of custodial parents to direct and control the education of, and any medical treatment provided to, their dependent children attending its schools? Yes (based on 2010)
Are there any circumstances under which you believe a woman should have access to abortion*? (*Note: a surgical or medical intervention designed to prevent the death of the mother but which results in the unintended and undesired death of the pre-born child, is not an abortion) no response
Will you work to ensure that Catholic schools do not invite guest speakers who have publicly expressed positions that contradict the morality and teaching of the Church, no matter how great their achievements in politics, business, sports, science or the arts? Replied 'yes' in 2010, but her LGBTQ survey response negates this answer.
Will you work to ensure that educational materials that enter the premises of Catholic schools (e.g., library resources, curriculum texts, awareness campaigns, flyers) and all approved school activities are consistent with and do not undermine the morality and teachings of the Church? Replied 'yes' in 2010, but her LGBTQ survey response negates this answer.
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is an infection that is transmitted through sex. Will you therefore oppose HPV vaccination in schools because it sends the message to students, teachers and parents that obedience to Church teaching on abstinence before marriage is neither expected nor necessary? no response
